‘[Joe’s] advice provided an incredibly useful step by step process. He gave me a key to a door I had been standing outside of for a long time. His positivity challenged me and also inspired me to continue. This was inspiring beyond measure.’

— Caroline A.

For me, Joe is the best kind of teacher. He engaged with my work at where I was at and pushed me on to the next level.

‘Joe took me seriously as a writer and gave me confidence in myself and my poems. His feedback was thoughtful, detailed and contained great learnings for me and he always seemed to pick the bit of my writing that I wasn’t happy with and illuminate it for me.’

— Paula K.

‘It’s been super affirming for me and my writing as something I’ve always wanted to do but have never had the courage or guidance to even contemplate until now.

So truly, thank you for such comprehensive and clever feedback that really resonated.’

JOE NUTTALL

POETRY

An award-winning poet and published author, I am a graduate from the University of Tasmania, and a professional poetry tutor with a passion for language and story.

From haikus, short-form poetry and stream-of-consciousness writing all the way to strictly-metered rhyming verse and multi-part epics, I pride myself on my attention to detail and a genuine love of words.

As a poetry editor, I want to help you get the most out of your writing — whether you are looking to publish, pitch to small press or literary magazines, or are just writing for yourself. Poetry is more often than not an act of slow, careful polishing. First making a good thing great... then making a great thing perfect.

Inspiration and intent, language, rhythm, structure and delivery — all are fundamentally important to good poetry, but sometimes focusing on one particular area and working to refine it can be the turning point you need. To that end, my mentorship style is different for every poet I work with — a flexible approach allowing space and time for learning, experimentation and refinement.

Ultimately, every writer’s ambitions are different and I aim to reflect that by listening more than I prescribe.

It may be that your work is already half finished and you simply need help with the final sprint, or it could be that you’ve just discovered poetry and need guidance through what often feels like a labyrinth of words. Either way, I’ll work with you to get the results you want.

Once your writing is completed, edited and proof-read into its final state, I can work with you to publish it. Poetry magazines, journals, online portals and compilations all accept submissions, but navigating the process can be intimidating. If publishing is your goal, I will guide you through, step by step, to submit your work.

And let’s be honest, seeing your poetry in print is a great feeling.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you have, or even just to request more information about the process of poetry mentorship.
